JUNE 16 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 6 THROUGH HIS OWN EYES Images and artifacts from the collection of former Fort Ontario refugee Walter Greenberg. In the museum anteroom. Free with museum admission. Sponsored by Exhibits and More.
JULY 5, JULY 26, AUGUST 16 OPEN ADMISSION DAYS Safe Haven Museum and Education Center opens its doors to the community, free of charge. Sponsored by Pathfinder Bank.
JULY 26 1pm OSWEGO PLAYHOUSE SONGS OF FREEDOM Dr. Marilyn Smiley presents a fascinating and entertaining program about the music and musicians that were part of the refugee esperience at Ft. AUGUST 2 1pm OSWEGO PLAYHOUSE LANGUAGE, SHMANGUAGE An informative presentation by Dr. Paul (Hershl) Glasser about the transformation of the Yiddish language as immigrants traveled over time and continents. $5 adult admission, $2 senior & student admission, free to Safe Haven museum members. SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMMING
Starting July 29th there will be a reading program for 7-12 grade students. They will be reading The Devils Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. The program will run for four weeks, on Wednesdays, ending on August 19, 2009. Each session will begin at 3:30pm and end by 5:00pm. The youth will discuss the story as well as view the movie. There will be discussions each session and the program will end with a creative project.
On July 31, 2009 there will be a Childrens Reading Hour for youth in grades 3-5. The program begins at 3:00pm and will last an hour. The story being read will be Rebekkahs Journey by Ann E. Burg. After the story there will be a discussion and an arts and crafts project.
On August 1, 2009 is a program called God Grew Tired of Us which is aimed at youth in grades 6-8. The program will begin at 3:30pm and end by 5:00pm. This program will involve watching parts of the documentary God Grew Tired of Us. There will also be discussion and a learning activity.
All youth programming is located at the Safe Haven Museum and Education Center. The address is 2 East 7th Street in Oswego. All programs are aimed at expressing the importance of tolerance and diversity. Any questions please feel free to contact the museum.
